In 1913 T. J. Cobden-Sanderson walked to
Hammersmith Bridge and
threw his Doves typeface
into the river, thereby ‘bequeathing’ his creation
to the Thames. His action unwittingly mirrored
F. T. Marinetti’s Futurist call for ‘parole in libertà’
(words set free, 1912), which has informed my
research into abstracted letterforms stripped of
their conventional usage.
