In 2022, the Transitional Justice Promotion Committee in Taiwan ended its four-year tenure, with its responsibilities distributed among various government departments. The new "Human Rights and Transitional Justice Department" within the Executive Yuan and the "Promotion of Transitional Justice Council" now oversee these initiatives. Taiwan's transitional justice aims to address human rights violations and injustices from the Martial Law era (1949-1987) by promoting accountability, truth, reconciliation, and societal healing. During its operation, the Committee faced criticism regarding its efficiency, impartiality, and fairness, with some viewing it as a political tool. There is also a significant lack of public understanding about transitional justice, with some perceiving it as being manipulated by political parties for mutual attacks. Recognizing the importance of historical memory among Taiwan's diverse ethnic groups, it is essential to advance transitional justice with practical actions and collective societal efforts to foster a more enlightened approach. Public awareness about transitional justice remains low, with insufficient strategies to support those affected by past injustices. An internet poll identified political party conflicts and a perceived lack of public support as major obstacles to advancing transitional justice. The enduring political tensions between the Kuomingtang (KMT) and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) create a contentious environment, making it difficult to address historical issues like the White Terror era. The project's primary goal is to raise awareness about human rights issues in Taiwan, particularly among the younger generation, by informing them about historical narratives and future focal points. To effectively communicate this, the project’s aim is to developing a branding and identity system for multiple application, using design to stimulate dialogue and understanding of transitional justice's goals and significance in Taiwan's socio-political context. |
