The pressure of modern society on women to have children and women’s fear of having children, and to propose a way to weaken these two contradictions. In some parts of China, women don’t have the right to decide to have children or not to have children. For them, having children is like a mandate that they have to do in their lifetime, also they are pushed by the society, their relatives and friends to complete this mandate.
This also leads to women becoming more and more afraid of having children, they don’t have enough time, enough money and enough patient to rise a child. Also the lack of knowledge about childbirth in the society makes them have only negative feelings about childbirth, the society only thinks of sending out messages to promote childbirth, but it does not think about how to change women’s minds, for example, if society are given more benefits, maternity leave and so on, maybe women will be willing to make some changes. If women don’t see the benefits of having a baby, then having a baby is the same as giving up a career, giving up the opportunity to earn money, and investing a lot of energy, time and money into a newborn baby
I use the oyster as a metaphor for women and mothers because it has no way to move, who are oppressed by society. For the sake of fertility rate and labour force, many governments are blindly promoting childbirth, making it to a political task. This has resulted in many people not understanding or confronting the risks and dangers of childbearing. And the key to the oppression of women's bodies in the gendered connotations given to the body. So when feminists fight for women's advancement, they often want women's sexuality to be liberated from being "defined by men" and "manipulated by men" and to truly belong to themselves.
Therefore, the project will not only use illustrations, interviews and photography to show what women are afraid of giving birth, but also make more people think about the reasons why they are afraid of giving birth from women’s perspective, and then disseminate more comprehensive knowledge such as news and essay to women about giving birth instead of blindly fearing it, aims to tell them something are as not horrible as they thought.
