Looking up at the starry sky, people are always curious about the unknown in outer space. Curiosity will lead people to discover new worlds all the time. However, the ocean, which is related to all the species on the Earth, still has 80% of the area unexplored.

My hometown is an island. I have so many sweet childhood memories near the beach, so I love to stay in the ocean and snorkel. In my project, I want to reveal the mystery of deep-sea creatures and show the beauty of these creatures. My inspiration is a documentary from a couple of years ago. When I took a long flight, I watched a documentary about the creatures in Mariana Trench. I was amazed by the beauty and mystery of those creatures. Besides, the visual view of the luminescence on those creatures also inspires me. That was my first thought of this project. After some basic research, I realized that bioluminescent could be used in the biomedical field, especially cancer treatments.

Another important reason for researching these creatures is their use in biotechnology. These creatures live in extreme environments, such as high pressure and low oxygen, no light, and extreme temperatures in the water. In the future, we may have to live in another extreme environment. However, so many creatures undersea have not been found yet. Some may be extinct before scientists find them because of marine pollution. I hope the project can raise awareness of their existence and promote protection.

Besides, I would add the cultural and Humanities part to this project. About deep-sea animals, many people may think about ugly and scary-looking fish, and there are plenty of sea monsters in many legends and myths from diverse cultures and religions. Stories earn attention, and I would compare the mysterious creatures and the sea monsters from multiple myths. The audience could enjoy the visual expression from the posters and understand the stories and the fun facts about deep-sea creatures.

According to Wikipedia, A cosmic ocean is a mythological motif. It represents the world or cosmos enveloped by a vast primordial ocean. Found in many cultures and civilizations, the cosmic ocean existed before the creation of the Earth. From the primordial waters, the Earth and the entire cosmos arose. The topic includes the myth part and the visual imagination in this topic. Staring at the vast universe, we can see stars shine gracefully. It is like the deep-sea creatures which glow in the dark sea.

The mock-up shows the effect I want to strengthen in this project. It lets the image and words shine.  I introduced one of the sea monsters, the Leviathan myth. Meanwhile, it talks about one bioluminescent jelly fish, Lobed Comb Jelly. The old print of the Leviathan was from < La mythologie du Rhin > in 1862. The illustrator is Gustave Dore’.
This one introduced the use of bioluminescence in medical science, and the story is the legend of the Kraken.  The deep-sea creature is the giant squid. Those two creatures look similar, so I put them together to compare. The illustration of the Kraken from < Twenty Thousand Leagues  Under the Sea > in 1870. The illustrators are Alphonse de Neuville and Édouard Riou.
The left page is my contents page. I would put the research and the design process in the publication. They would be from so many different fields.
“Unknown is a sign of danger.” That's the essential explanation about having Thalassophobia. “ Hence, I would show the attractive world under the deep sea. “ The second sentence is what I want to say.
