The Canary Islands, an archipelago of 8 islands located in the North Atlantic Ocean, have been part of Spain since 1402 but are geographically closer to Western Sahara. Outside the archipelago, the islands are primarily known as popular holiday destinations because of their year-round warm weather and beaches. Yet, beyond palm trees and beaches, little is known about their rich cultural heritage and traditions.

Many of which have developed in a unique way, due to the islands’ relative geographical isolation, their indigenous heritage, and their historical importance as the last port of call for those sailing to the Americas. This project explores the islands’ cultural heritage through in-depth ethnographic research and archival imagery. Using a map as a form of publication, it enables the audience to locate intangible forms of cultural heritage geographically, specifically festivities, and explore them in the wider cultural context.

Given the ever growing challenges that the islands are facing because of climate change, over-tourism and other factors, there is a sense that some of these traditions and heritage may be under threat. The first publication focuses largely on the island of Tenerife but it has been designed to form part of a larger series, which will cover more of the archipelago.
